City Green appeals for community assistance in watering the city's trees

In the city of Lünen, a number of tree species are facing challenges due to the persistent drought and the effects of climate change. The affected tree species include mountain ash, birch, ash, chestnut, and beech.

To combat this issue, the department of urban greenery in Lünen is appealing to the city's population for support. They are asking residents to help water young trees regularly, as this is crucial for their growth and survival.

Each year, up to 500 new trees are planted in Lünen, with a focus on climate-resilient species and native species. However, many of these young trees are struggling to establish themselves due to the dry conditions.

Jürgen Arendes, head of the department of urban greenery in Lünen, emphasizes the importance of trees for the urban climate. He states that proper watering practices can help mitigate the effects of climate change on Lünen's tree population.

The best time for watering trees in Lünen is early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize water evaporation. Water should be allowed to seep in directly at the base of the tree trunk. Avoid watering over the leaves as it brings little benefit and can be harmful.

An additional bucket of water per day can help keep trees in the vicinity of Lünen healthy. Young trees, in particular, need regular watering to grow and thrive.

The city of Lünen has been planting climate-resistant trees for several years, with a focus on both native species and those that can withstand the challenges posed by climate change.

On August 22, 2025, the effects of climate change were noticeable in Lünen's cityscape, with numerous street and park trees suffering from persistent drought. The department of urban greenery continues to appeal for support from the Lünen population in watering young trees to secure the city's tree population and mitigate the effects of climate change.
