City center trams in Munich encounter delays - Subterranean journey fell short of expectations

In the city of Munich, a significant tram track renovation project is underway, causing temporary disruptions to several tram lines. The project is expected to last from Monday, June 2, 2025, until presumably Sunday, August 31, 2025.

Due to the renovation, tram lines 16, 19, and 21 will be temporarily rerouted and partly replaced by buses. The changes are as follows:

  • Tram 16 will run only between Romanplatz and Sendlinger Tor until at least October 12. It will run via Karlsplatz (Stachus) - Sendlinger Tor - Isartor.
  • Tram 19 and night tram N19 will be diverted between Munich's main station south and Max-Weber-Platz until at least September 14. The section Lenbachplatz - Marienplatz (Theatinerstraße) - Maximilianeum will be omitted for these trams until September 15.
  • Tram 21 will be diverted between Karlsplatz (Stachus) and Max-Weber-Platz until at least September 14. In the section Lenbachplatz - Maximilianeum, tram 21 will not operate until September 15. Between Sendlinger Tor and Isartor, tram 21 will still run.
  • Between Sendlinger Tor and Isartor, tram 17 will run instead of tram 16.
  • In the section Isartor - Effnerplatz, buses will run as a replacement for tram 16 from October 13.

The delay in the renovation project is due to the ground in the roundabout area not being as expected, requiring height adjustments to the concrete support plate that was installed about 15 years ago. The city works (SWM) have adjusted their standardized procedure for track renewal to avoid such risks in the future.

Information on diversions and replacement traffic can be found on the website mvg.de/trambau. Munich residents should expect restrictions on the main line due to the tram track renovation. The work on the switches and tracks between Prielmayerstraße and Elisenstraße is scheduled to be completed by the end of August.

The renovation project includes work on the tram tracks at Karlsplatz (Stachus) and the Maxmonument. The renovation at the Maxmonument and Maximilianstraße is delayed, but regular operation is expected to resume after the scheduled period.

We encourage all commuters to plan their trips accordingly and check the mvg.de/trambau website for the latest updates on the tram disruptions.
