City announces construction bidding for Carola Bridge
The city of Dresden is embarking on a significant project with the rebuilding of the Carolabridge, scheduled for completion in 2031. The demolition of the existing structure, which collapsed unexpectedly in September 2024, is currently underway, but poses certain challenges due to the innovative materials used, specifically carbon concrete.
The demolition process is complex, with estimates putting the total costs at 32 million euros. Stephan Kühn, the Mayor of Construction in Dresden, has confirmed these figures. However, details about the disposal of the carbon concrete are not yet clear.
Local politician Holger Zastrow is advocating for a high-performance bridge, warning against a potential culture war. The debate about the number of lanes has been ongoing for months, with the new bridge set to be a four-lane structure.
To prepare for the rebuilding, the city of Dresden has published tender documents for planning offices on September 20, 2025. Four offices will be selected by December 2025 to simultaneously prepare design proposals for the reconstruction, with the actual firms yet to be named. These offices will work on designs until the end of May 2026.
The lack of experience in recycling carbon concrete could pose challenges during the demolition and disposal of the bridge. While there is limited experience with this building material, the city is looking to overcome this hurdle in the interest of sustainability.
The rebuilding of the Carolabridge is a topic of ongoing debate, with a focus on its design and functionality. The potential for a culture war is a concern raised by Zastrow, highlighting the importance of a thoughtful and inclusive approach to the project.
Construction work for the new bridge could begin in 2028, marking a new chapter in the history of Dresden. The rebuilding of the Carolabridge is a significant project, involving the use of innovative materials and a focus on functionality and design.
