Cities face conflict with Trump's military action decree
In the political landscape of the United States, the presidency of Donald Trump has been marked by a series of controversial events that have drawn both criticism and support.
Starting overseas, Trump's actions towards Ukraine have raised eyebrows, as many perceive the country to be under Putin's control. Domestically, Trump has threatened to rename the Department of Defense as the War Ministry, a move that has sparked debate among political circles.
Satirists find it challenging to make light of Trump's excessive arrogance, as his actions often overshadow the potential for humour. In a more serious note, the USA has been accused of moving towards fascism, with an authoritarian restructuring of the state in full swing. This transformation has been evident in Trump's pressure on the media and universities, threats towards political opponents, and cleansing of agencies and the military.
Trump's actions extend to foreign policy as well. The US recently engaged in a confrontation with Venezuela, with troops shooting at a ship from the country, resulting in the death of 11 people. Trump has also threatened Venezuela, stating he would shoot down its fighter jets, and has made similar threats towards Chicago, suggesting a potential military intervention.
In a more troubling development, Trump has allowed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to have free rein in Gaza, potentially committing a suspected genocide. This action has sparked international condemnation and concerns about human rights violations.
On the home front, the largest raid in the history of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took place in Georgia in September 2025. Nearly 475 foreign nationals—mostly South Koreans—were detained on suspicion of illegally residing or working in the U.S. This event has highlighted the increasingly strict immigration policies under the Trump administration.
Trump's disregard for US law and court decisions has also been a point of contention. In June and August, the National Guard was sent to Los Angeles and Washington, respectively, raising questions about the administration's respect for constitutional rights.
Despite the cynicism that often surrounds Trump's actions, it is important to remember that these actions have serious consequences for many. The fascination with Trump's cynicism should not overshadow the suffering of his political victims.
In a somewhat lighter note, former late-night talk show host Harald Schmidt referred to Trump as a "genial entertainer." While Trump's actions may provide entertainment for some, it is crucial to consider the impact of these actions on the broader society.
Trump's example is being followed worldwide, leading to a trampling of democratic values and strengthening of authoritarian tendencies. As the world watches, it remains to be seen how these developments will shape the future of democracy and human rights.
