On Sunday, March 30th at 2:30 PM, a special tour titled "The Ways of Water in the Monastery" will be held at the Monastery Kloster Maulbronn, located in Maulbronn. This tour, announced by the State Castles and Gardens (SSG), promises to reveal the intricate water management system designed by the monks of the Zisterzienser order.
The Monastery Kloster Maulbronn, part of the State Castles and Gardens, is associated with the Zisterzienser order. The picturesque well house and the monastery church are just two examples where the spiritual component of the Zisterzienser's water use can be discovered.
The tour will pass by the Faust Tower and the Deep Lake, providing insights into the sustainable water use and spiritual aspects of the Zisterzienser. The canal that flows through the Monastery Kloster Maulbronn still exists to this day, serving as a testament to the ingenuity of the monks who built it.
The canal was not only used for aesthetic purposes but also to power the monastic grain mill located within the monastery. A complex system of ditches was built around the Monastery Kloster Maulbronn to drain wetlands into the Salzach. This system served multiple purposes, including draining, serving as water reserves, fish ponds, and providing a food source.
Many of the installations built for the ditches system are still traceable and serve their original purposes today. The watercourses of the Salzach and Blaubach were enclosed within the monastery walls as a canal for wastewater and sewage.
