Cinema maintains showing of Bully Herbig's movie "The Canoe of Manitu"
In a recent turn of events, a fabricated media report about the removal of the film "Das Kanu des Manitu" from a cinema's program has been shared by an X-profile, causing a stir among audiences. However, it appears that this news may be satire, as no such cinema chain named "Filmpalast24" exists in reality.
"Das Kanu des Manitu," a sequel to the successful film "Der Schuh des Manitu" from 2001, features an intriguing plotline. The film presents a homosexual protagonist and an "Apache" character played by Michael Bully Herbig, who is also one of the film's creators.
The film, set in a fictionalized version of the wild west, has been subject to criticism for its depiction of cultural appropriation and its portrayal as potentially racist and homophobic. Michael Bully Herbig has mentioned that the film was intended to be humorous, and no thought was given to "woke" concerns.
Jonas von Fehrn-Stender, the second deputy chairman of the Association of German Film Theaters, has confirmed that the film has not been removed from the program in any cinema that had planned to show it. Despite this, the initial spread of the false news about the film's removal was widespread, with over 212,000 views on the first post.
Unmarked satire can be problematic, as shown by the case of "Das Kanu des Manitu." Users continued to spread the false news on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, and Tiktok, with the correction only being seen around 700 times. Both profiles that initially spread the false news later corrected themselves, stating that the news is fabricated.
It is essential to verify information before sharing it, especially in sensitive matters such as these. The misinformation surrounding "Das Kanu des Manitu" could potentially fuel a debate about cultural appropriation, highlighting the importance of accurate reporting and responsible sharing of news.
