New York City Cider Week Celebrates the Diverse World of Cider
New York City is set to host its annual celebration of cider, with the seventh edition of New York City Cider Week taking place from November 2nd to the 11th. Organized by the New York Cider Association (NYCA), this weeklong fest aims to help New Yorkers appreciate the variety of apples and ciders available in the state.
Jenn Smith, the executive director of the NYCA, emphasizes that cider is not just one thing. There is a huge range in texture, color, and flavor, she says. This year's celebration includes a new crossover event that will explore the intersection of beer, raw wine, and craft cider.
One of the highlights of this year's New York Cider Week is Ciderfeast NYC, a grand tasting event on November 10th. This event, held in partnership with Jimmy's No. 43, features cider producers, chefs, cheesemakers, and live music. The crossover event will feature a panel discussion with Lauren Grimm of Grimm Artisanal Ales, John Reynolds of Black Duck Cidery, and Derek Trowbridge of Old World Winery. The conversation aims to give wine and craft beer enthusiasts a taste of the cider world and understand how it compares to the artisanal beverages they are already passionate about. The panel discussion will be moderated by Dan Pucci, a cider expert and industry consultant.
The event is held in partnership with Jimmy's No. 43 and features cider producers, chefs, cheesemakers, and live music. Besides the headliners, there are dozens of events happening all over the city during New York Cider Week. Some of these events include daily tastings at City Swiggers, pairing dinners, and a whole hog and cider dinner at the Breslin.
On November 8th, more than 30 New York cider producers will gather at Essex Street Market. This is the fastest-selling year for tickets to New York Cider Week events. The state producing the second most apples in the U.S. is not specified, but it trails Washington State.
New York Cider Week aims to show that cider is many things, and most of those things are happening in New York State. Whether you prefer bone-dry ciders that drink like Champagne, still and slightly funky styles, or sweet and fizzy ciders, there's something for everyone during New York City Cider Week.
