Church leader describes initial religious service following gun attack as modest commencement

In the aftermath of the devastating shooting at the Annunciation School in Minneapolis on August 27, which claimed the lives of two students and left 15 others injured, the community came together for a healing Mass. Held four days later on August 30, the Mass was attended by over 400 people, including members from other parishes in the archdiocese, in a show of solidarity and support.

The Mass was presided over by Father Dennis Zehren, the pastor of Annunciation parish, who spoke poignantly about the tragedy and the need for humility. Father Zehren referenced the shooting incident, stating that it was a reminder of Jesus' presence in difficult times. He emphasized that God's power could bring hope and rebuilding after tragedy.

During his sermon, Father Zehren spoke about Jesus' message of humility, urging the congregation to accept uncomfortable situations. He described Jesus as having descended into hell and taking on all the darkness and evil in the world. The Scriptures for the day also emphasized humility, with Jesus encouraging his listeners to avoid taking the seat of honor.

Father Chuck delivered the sermon at the Annunciation School the following weekend, continuing the theme of humility and healing. Archbishop Bernard Hebda and Deacon Kevin Conneely also participated in the Mass.

Sean O'Brien, a lifelong member of Annunciation parish, attended the Mass and expressed optimism about the community's rebuilding. Sean and his family were present during the shooting incident, but none of them were injured. Sean's words resonated with the congregation, as they too looked towards a brighter future.

Paul Wratkowski, a member of St. Cecilia parish in St. Paul, attended the Mass to support the Catholic community. He stated that God wants us to thrive in community, support, and love one another. His sentiments were echoed by many, as the community continued to gather in faith and hope.

The Mass was held in the parish school auditorium next to the church, as the church remains closed and must be reconsecrated before it can be used for worship again. Despite the temporary setback, the community's spirit remained undeterred, as they came together to heal, support each other, and seek solace in their faith.

The tragedy at Annunciation School has shaken the community, but the resilience and unity displayed in the wake of the incident serve as a testament to the power of faith and community. As the healing process continues, the community looks forward to the day when they can gather once more in their beloved church.
