Christmas Lottery Morning: How to Claim According to the Amount and Avoid Donations
Spain’s El Gordo Christmas Lotto 2025 draw will take place in Madrid on December 21. Tickets can be purchased through partner banks like BBVA, CaixaBank, and Santander, either online, via apps, or at in-branch terminals. Winners must act quickly, as prizes expire after three months.
Lottery tickets act as bearer instruments, so possession alone grants the right to claim a prize. If a ticket is lost or stolen, filing a police report immediately blocks unauthorised payouts. Damaged tickets require verification by the National Mint and Stamp Factory (FNMT) if they are heavily worn or torn.
Prizes under €2,000 can be collected directly from any authorised Loterías y Apuestas del Estado retail outlet. For amounts of €2,000 or more, winners must visit one of the designated partner banks. These banks cannot charge fees or commissions for processing payouts.
The first €40,000 of any prize is tax-free. Any sum above that threshold faces a 20% withholding tax, automatically deducted by Spain’s Tax Agency. Winners sharing a ticket must declare all participants to avoid gift tax issues. Financial advisors often recommend a medium-term investment strategy, allowing winnings to grow steadily over time.
Claiming a prize requires action within three months of the draw, with no extensions allowed. Winners should secure their tickets, verify any damage, and follow tax rules to avoid complications. Partner banks and official outlets remain the only authorised channels for collecting prizes.
