Chinese investors acquire Jack Wolfskin for €290 million.
German Outdoor Clothing Manufacturer Jack Wolfskin Sold to Anta Sports
Jack Wolfskin, a renowned German outdoor clothing manufacturer based in Idstein, is set to change hands once again. The company, which currently generates around €325 million in sales, has been purchased by Anta Sports, a Hong Kong-based sportswear conglomerate, for a reported €263 million ($290 million).
The sale was announced on Thursday, marking a new chapter in Jack Wolfskin's turbulent history. The company was previously owned by Topgolf Callaway Brands, a US golf sports specialist, since 2018. Before that, Jack Wolfskin was acquired by Blackstone for €700 million in 2011, and later passed to a group of hedge funds and then to Callaway in 2019.
Anta Sports sees significant potential in Jack Wolfskin's supply chain, product development, and retail operations. The company, known internationally through its subsidiary Amer Sports, which includes brands like Atomic, Salomon, Wilson, Peak Performance, Arcteryx, among others, aims to expand the outdoor segment with the acquisition of Jack Wolfskin.
Two-thirds of Jack Wolfskin's sales are traditionally generated in the second half of the year. The company, which employs approximately 1,500 people, is expected to generate an operating profit (EBITDA) of €12 million for the current year.
The expansion abroad by Jack Wolfskin under previous ownership failed. However, Anta Sports, with its international presence, may provide the necessary push for Jack Wolfskin to achieve its global ambitions.
Topgolf Callaway Brands is focusing on its core business, leading to the decision to sell Jack Wolfskin. The group of financial investors that took over Jack Wolfskin from Blackstone in 2011 was Bain Capital.
Anta Sports entered Amer Sports in 2019 as part of a consortium. The sale price for Jack Wolfskin is a significant increase from the €418 million Topgolf Callaway Brands paid for the company in 2018.
With this acquisition, Anta Sports continues to strengthen its position in the global sportswear market. Jack Wolfskin, with its strong brand and product portfolio, is expected to play a crucial role in Anta Sports' growth strategy.
