Chinese automaker Geely urged to elevate investments in Proton's Advanced Automotive Tech Park

In a significant move for the Malaysian automotive sector, Proton's electric vehicle (EV) factory was officially launched today in Tanjong Malim. The event was attended by high-profile dignitaries, including Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, and Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

The launch of the Proton EV factory opens up opportunities for the company to penetrate international markets, including Egypt, South Africa, and Brazil. This expansion is encouraged by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who has invited Chinese automotive giant Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd, Proton's parent company, to increase its investment in Malaysia's Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV).

AHTV, an important hub for the regional automotive supply chain, has seen significant investment from national automotive company Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (Proton). The prime minister has also asked Proton to showcase its capabilities, performance, and technology during the upcoming ASEAN Summit to further penetrate export markets.

The product launched at the Proton EV factory is designed to cater to lower-income consumers seeking affordable cars with better features. This move aligns with Proton's success in Egypt, where their cars have become popular and affordable emerging vehicles. In fact, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has expressed admiration for Proton Egypt's performance.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister of Malaysia, wants AHTV to become an important center for Geely. He has encouraged the company to establish not just a car manufacturing plant but also a center of excellence for training and education. This will help ensure the success of investments in the AHTV area.

The prime minister has also emphasized the importance of cooperation between the state government and relevant ministries to facilitate this growth. The 47th ASEAN Summit, scheduled for October, will provide a platform for Proton to showcase its capabilities and technology to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who are expected to attend the event.

The efforts to penetrate the South African and Brazilian markets have been announced by Proton itself. The company aims to reduce EV production cost, allowing the cars to compete in meeting the needs of the middle-income group. With this strategic expansion, Proton is demonstrating its ability to venture into foreign industries and break down barriers.
