Child's Parent Narrates Traumatic Experience Following Minneapolis Church Shooting Incident

A tragic incident occurred last week at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, where a 23-year-old opened fire, resulting in the death of two children and injuring 21 others. Among the survivors is six-year-old David Haeg, who has since expressed his desire for a change in gun control policies.

David's mother, Brittany Haeg, has been taking things day by day since the incident. She described her son as a bright and bubbly first grader with a fondness for art and playing outdoors. However, the shooting has left a lasting impact on David. He has been grappling with "very big feelings" since his surgery and hospitalization, where he suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen, his spleen was torn, and two other bullets grazed the back of his head. Bits of shrapnel were found across the left side of his body, including his arm and leg.

Despite his ordeal, David is now walking around unassisted. His resilience has not gone unnoticed, with other parents, including Malia Kimbrell, rallying behind him and calling for a more forceful approach to gun control. Malia Kimbrell, the mother of Vivian St. Clair, who was one of the children killed in the shooting, wants an immediate ban on semiautomatic rifles and high-capacity magazines.

Brittany Haeg echoes Malia's sentiments, believing that Minnesota lawmakers should make changes in gun control. She hopes for more aggressive steps around gun control from state and federal lawmakers. In a letter to elected officials, David himself expressed his desire for people not to buy guns and for guns to be gotten rid of.

The care team at the Hennepin County Medical Center advised Brittany and her family on how to talk about the shooting with David. Brittany is spending time with her family, ensuring David feels safe and loved during this challenging time. She admitted it will be a long time before they are back to normal.

Malia Kimbrell, too, has a message for any lawmaker who votes against such a measure. She emphasised the need for immediate action to prevent such tragedies from happening again. As the community continues to heal, the call for gun control reform remains strong, with survivors like David leading the charge.
