Children assume their parents' roles at a district gathering in Livingston County

Livingston County's Bring Your Child to Work Day was a resounding success, with approximately 40 children aged between 5 and 15 years taking part in the event. The program was designed to provide these young participants with a hands-on learning experience across various departments.

The day began at the Government Center in Geneseo, where children toured the Assembly Room and held a pretend board meeting. From there, they visited a variety of workplaces, including the Board of Supervisors room, a police rescue vehicle, and the Health Department.

At the Sheriff's Office, deputies helped children complete child ID kits and showed them the emergency call systems at the 911 center. Meanwhile, at the Department of Social Services, kids learned about programs like SNAP and child care support for families in need.

The event continued to provide a hands-on learning experience across various departments. At Workforce Development, children received help writing résumés. At the County Clerk's Office, Acting Clerk Kristine Secor allowed children to pose for mock passport photos and explained the County's record-keeping processes.

Children also had the opportunity to cast real ballots at the Board of Elections, voting for their favourite candy, football team, and colour. In the Health Department, Chelsea Nichols's children learned about her workplace and expressed excitement for next year's event.

Public health officials demonstrated how pollution affects local watersheds, providing the children with an insight into the importance of environmental conservation. The day concluded with a mix of science, history, and career preparation activities.

Kelly Greenway, the County's training and development coordinator, was responsible for organizing the event. Parents, such as Grant Cox, a network administrator, appreciated the educational experience the event offered. Chelsea Nichols expressed her satisfaction with the event, stating that her children learned a lot.
