Chick-fil-A's phone-free meal challenge rewards families with ice cream
A Chick-fil-A restaurant in Towson Place, Maryland, is encouraging families to enjoy meals without phones. Those who take part in the challenge receive a free ice cream cone at the end. The initiative aims to create more quality time together at the table.
The programme, called the Chick-fil-A Cell Phone Coop Challenge, asks families to hand over their phones before eating. A team member provides a small container—dubbed a 'coop'—to store the devices during the meal. If everyone keeps their phones away until the end, they all get an Icedream Cone as a reward.
A 2023 study found that 68% of households have at least one person using a phone while eating with others. The same research showed that 65% dislike when someone checks their device during meals, and 42% consider it rude. This challenge directly addresses those concerns. For now, the promotion is limited to the Towson Place location. No other Chick-fil-A branches in the US have introduced similar schemes. The company has not yet responded to requests for further comment.
The free ice cream offer gives families a small incentive to disconnect during meals. The challenge reflects broader concerns about phone use at the dinner table. Only the Towson Place branch currently runs the programme, with no immediate plans for wider rollout.
