ChatGPT's Image Watermarking Feature: What We Know So Far

ChatGPT, the popular AI model developed by OpenAI, is rumoured to be developing a watermarking system for images it generates. Here's what we know about this potential feature based on recent discoveries.

In April 2025, Tibor Blaho on X noticed the "ImageGen watermark" within ChatGPT's code, sparking speculation about the possibility of a watermarking feature. This speculation was further fuelled by an APK teardown of ChatGPT v1.2025.196 beta by Android Authority, which revealed references to "image-gen-watermark-for-free" and the "Save without watermark" option.

The current beta version of ChatGPT includes a functional "Save without watermark" feature, located in the three-dot menu for generated images, alongside existing choices like Edit, Select, Save, and Share. However, it's important to note that the implementation details of this feature might change or be withdrawn.

The presence of the "image-gen-watermark-for-free" string in ChatGPT's code suggests that the watermark may apply to free-tier users. Yet, as of now, there is no public indication that images created with ChatGPT include a watermark for either paid or free users. OpenAI developed a digital watermarking tool for text content but chose not to release it, and no similar watermarking feature for images has been publicly documented.

The "Save without watermark" option might be designed to deter casual use through added friction points. During testing, the watermarking feature was activated on the free tier of ChatGPT, but it's unclear if this will remain the case in the final version of the feature.

It's also worth noting that APK teardowns indicate potential future features, but their public release is not guaranteed. OpenAI has not officially announced the watermarking feature for ChatGPT, and the watermarking system for ChatGPT-generated images is still under development and subject to change.

In conclusion, while the watermarking feature for ChatGPT-generated images is a topic of interest, it's essential to approach the information with caution. As more details emerge, we will keep you updated on the latest developments.
