Mickey Burns, a 44-year-old cyclist, is preparing to embark on an epic journey from Chiswick, London, to Liverpool, covering a distance of more than 200 miles. The fundraiser, scheduled to start on Thursday evening and conclude at Centre 56's family fun day on Friday, aims to raise funds for Centre 56, a domestic abuse charity.

The idea for this challenging cycling route was conceived by the organizers of the "Cycle Against Abuse" campaign. The route, a 232-mile journey, symbolically connects the site of the first women's refuge in the UK, established by Chiswick Women's Aid in 1971, to Liverpool city centre, home to Centre 56.

Despite feeling a bit nervous about the start, Burns expects to get into the zone once he starts cycling. He will be accompanied by a team of three who will provide food, support, and ensure he continues cycling throughout the fundraiser.

Burns was inspired to take on this challenge after supporting Centre 56 fundraiser Alex Rigby, who ran to every station on the Merseyrail network earlier this year. His brother Brendan is also fundraising for Centre 56 and plans to run the London Marathon next year.

Centre 56, founded in 1973, was the first women's refuge established outside London. Although it no longer operates a refuge, it continues to support families facing domestic abuse, including with a specialist nursery.

As Burns sets off around 6 or 7 PM, depending on the weather, to avoid heavy traffic, he will be greeted in Liverpool by staff and supporters at the Centre 56 family fun day, which runs from 11am to 2.30pm.

This fundraiser is a testament to Burns' commitment to supporting Centre 56 and raising awareness about the important work they do in helping those affected by domestic abuse. His journey serves as an inspiration to many, demonstrating the power of determination and the impact one person can make in the fight against domestic abuse.
