Charitable organization acclaimed for 12 years of compassionate care shown to woman before her passing.

In a heart-wrenching inquest, Relief Coroner Advocate Cyril Whelan paid tribute to the extraordinary care provided by the Jersey Cheshire Home, a local charity, towards Filipa Andrade Castro. The 45-year-old tragically lost her life in December 2023, following a 12-year journey of constant care.

The journey began in 2011 when Filipa suffered a traumatic brain injury in a three-vehicle collision. The driver of the vehicle she was in, who also perished in the crash, had epilepsy and was disqualified from driving. The vehicle was not equipped with seatbelts at the time of the crash.

After a considerable period in the hospital, Filipa was transferred to Jersey Cheshire Home, where she remained under their compassionate care for more than 12 years. For some time after her transfer, Filipa was verbal and responsive. However, towards the end of her life, she was effectively in a coma.

Advocate Whelan found the cause of death for Filipa to be aspiration pneumonia, occurring against a background of traumatic brain injury. A viral infection led to Filipa losing her capabilities.

During the inquest, a statement from the Jersey Cheshire Home nurse who cared for Filipa before her death was read out. The Relief Coroner praised the "fantastic work" of the charity, expressing a desire for more recognition of the work they do.

The Jersey Cheshire Home, a beacon of hope and care, played an instrumental role in Filipa's life. Their dedication and commitment to her care were evident in the 12 years they spent caring for her. Advocate Whelan described Filipa's death as tragic, noting that she hung on as long as she could.

The driver of the car involved in the collision may have been charged with driving offenses, including dangerous driving. The details of these charges are yet to be disclosed.

This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety and the incredible work done by charities like the Jersey Cheshire Home. Our thoughts remain with Filipa's family and friends during this difficult time.
