Chaotic Weather Hits Memmingen Airport, rendering it entirely immobile during the evening hours in Allgäu

In an unexpected turn of events, a Ryanair flight from Faro Airport in the Algarve, Portugal, operating under the flight number FR5782, was forced to deviate from its planned destination, Allgäu Airport (Memmingen), due to inclement weather.

The Boeing 737-8AS, operated by Malta Air, initially followed its flight path towards Allgäu Airport. However, as it approached the region, a severe storm prevented a successful landing at the airport. The flight path shows the plane turning north near Lindau, a town situated on the shores of Lake Constance.

As the storm raged over Lake Constance, the German Weather Service (DWD) issued storm warnings for parts of Bavaria in the evening. Heavy thunderstorms of level three out of four were predicted for both Swabia and Upper Bavaria, causing considerable concern for air travel in the region.

With Allgäu Airport grounded due to the storm, the Boeing 737 was redirected to Nuremberg Airport. Other planned landings and takeoffs at Memmingen Airport were postponed to later in the evening or cancelled altogether.

Weather warnings had been issued for the Allgäu region, with the DWD warning of lightning strikes, falling trees and power lines, falling roof tiles or branches, and flooding, landslides, and hail. The exact cause for the deviation of the flight's planned destination and the halting of evening landings and takeoffs at Allgäu Airport is not explicitly stated, but the severe weather conditions certainly played a significant role.

Despite the unforeseen circumstances, the Boeing 737 landed with a delay at Nuremberg Airport, according to Flightradar24. The passengers on board the flight were likely relieved to have reached their destination safely, albeit not the one initially planned.
