Chancellor's election bid: A breakdown of the potential outcomes and controversies associated with the candidate's political journey.

Robert Habeck, a long-time member of the German Green Party, has been officially declared as the party's chancellor candidate for the upcoming Bundestag elections. This announcement comes after a series of events that have shaped Habeck's political journey.

Habeck, known for his charisma, is expected to make a strong impression in debates against the CDU's Friedrich Merz and SPD's Olaf Scholz. His social media posts, which recently showed him editing a text manuscript with today's date (8th of November) highlighted and humming the melody of Herbert Grönemeyer's hit "Time for something to change", suggest a sense of urgency and determination.

Despite a history of tension with Annalena Baerbock, who prevailed as the Greens' chancellor candidate against Habeck in 2021, both politicians aim to work together in the upcoming campaign. Baerbock publicly endorsed Habeck as the chancellor candidate in late September on ARD "Report from Berlin".

Habeck's political career has not been without controversy. As Minister of Economics, he has negotiated compromises that have upset the left wing of his party, such as tightening immigration policy during his tenure. However, he believes in the possibility of a turnaround in sentiment and sees a "crystallization point" as a potential catalyst for this change.

Habeck attributes Germany's poor economic situation to the loss of Russian energy imports due to the war against Ukraine and delayed reforms by previous governments. As such, the topic of Germany's economic situation is likely to be a prominent feature of his campaign.

The Greens are currently polling at 9 to 11 percent, a difficult starting position for Habeck in terms of moving into the Chancellery. However, he hopes to win voters from the center. The SPD's poll numbers are only a few percentage points better, and they are also fielding a chancellor candidate.

The election of Habeck as the top man of the Greens will take place at the federal party conference in Wiesbaden, starting next Friday. As the campaign progresses, more details about the Greens' election campaign formation will likely emerge.

Habeck's love for spontaneous speeches carries risks, as he may strike the wrong tone or make factual mistakes. Nevertheless, his return to Instagram and his hints at his chancellor candidacy on various social media platforms indicate a willingness to engage with the public directly.

As the election approaches, the spotlight will be on Habeck as he seeks to lead the Greens to victory and potentially become Germany's next Chancellor.
