Centuries of debate: the journey of sex education in the educational system

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, one subject that continues to spark debate and controversy is sex education. The role of health crises and emancipation struggles has played a significant part in the transformations of sex education, shaping it from a taboo topic to a crucial part of the curriculum.

The program for affective and relational life and sex education (EVAS), introduced in 2023 by Pap Ndiaye, is a recent point of contention. Originally launched this fall after being postponed and revised due to protests and rumors, the EVAS program has been a subject of controversy since its introduction.

The EVAS program bears witness to the ongoing controversies surrounding sex education. It was initially introduced by Pap Ndiaye in 2023 as Minister of National Education, aiming to promote knowledge about sexuality and address topics such as personal fulfillment, prevention of sexist and sexual violence, demographic and health issues, struggles against discrimination, and equal rights.

However, the program has faced opposition from conservative religious circles and far-right populists, who have denounced it as pornographic or perverse at certain points in history. Sex education for children and adolescents remains a contentious issue, with some arguing that it is essential for a well-rounded education, while others maintain that it goes against their beliefs and values.

The story of sex education's transformations includes reconfigurations of power dynamics between religious institutions and political power. Historian Yves Verneuil, in his book titled "This hot topic", traces the tumultuous journey of sex education, revealing how it has moved from repressing debauchery to promoting knowledge about sexuality and reflecting profound societal changes in matters of sexuality and equality.

The evolution of sex education reflects the struggles against discrimination and for equal rights. From the role it played in the emancipation struggles of the past to its current position as a battleground for equal rights, sex education continues to question the role of the state and its educational limits.

Despite the oppositions that have hindered the progress of sex education, it has gradually found a place in classrooms. Sex education has moved from being a subject shrouded in secrecy to a topic that is openly discussed in classrooms, albeit with some resistance.

The transformations of sex education tell a story of the struggles against discrimination and for equal rights. As society continues to evolve and change, so too does the content and objectives of sex education. From promoting personal fulfillment to preventing sexist and sexual violence, sex education continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of our society.
