Cebu Province turns 10 public toilets into 'stop and shop' hubs for tourists
Cebu Province is enhancing 10 public toilet sites to improve facilities for tourists, transforming them into 'stop and shop' locations. The project, backed by the Office of the Governor, will initially focus on 10 sites in Sibonga, Argao, Oslob, Aloguinsan, Barili, City of Naga, Cebu City, Toledo City, Balamban, and Carcar City, with plans to expand to 40 more locations by 2026. The initiative aims to provide cleaner, more accessible 'rest stops' ahead of the summer travel rush and upcoming ASEAN events in May. The Cebu Provincial Tourism Office (PTO) has selected the first 10 sites for development, which are primarily 24-hour gasoline stations along national highways. Seven of the chosen sites require minor repairs and basic supplies. The Provincial Government will fund and carry out these upgrades, while partner businesses will maintain the facilities. The work is expected to be completed by March, just before the busy summer season. This project operates separately from the Department of Tourism's Tourist Rest Areas and complements Cebu's existing 'Hapitanan sa Sugbo' rest stops, which are funded by the Provincial Capitol. Once upgraded, the new sites will be listed in a tourist directory or map as official provincial toilet stops. The project operates under a public-private partnership, with plans to add 40 more toilet locations across the country by 2026. The upgraded facilities will offer tourists better access to clean 'rest stops', with the first 10 sites expected to be ready by March, supporting travel during the summer peak and ASEAN meetings in May. Maintenance will remain the responsibility of local partners after the improvements are complete.
