Cebu event suppliers challenge Waterfront Hotel's exclusivity policy
A group of event suppliers in Cebu has called on Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino to rethink its new exclusivity policy. Introduced on January 15, the rule restricts local businesses from offering services for events at the venue, including weddings, trade expos and concerts. The coalition, representing firms like Power Link and Events Beyond Compare, held a press briefing on February 6 to voice their concerns.
The policy has left many suppliers with pre-existing contracts in limbo. Some had already secured bookings and payments for upcoming events before the change took effect. To address this, the coalition has asked for a 'grandfather clause' to honour these agreements and a transition period for ongoing projects.
At the briefing, representatives stressed they were not seeking favours but fair competition. Their statement read: 'We are not seeking special treatment, only the opportunity to compete fairly and to allow clients the freedom to choose their suppliers.' They also urged Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival to step in, pushing for clients using the Pacific Grand Ballroom to retain the right to pick their own service providers.
The coalition has taken further action by filing a complaint with the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC). They argue the policy may breach competition rules by limiting client choice and sidelining local suppliers. As of now, Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino has not issued an official response to the concerns raised.
The dispute centres on the impact of the exclusivity policy on local businesses and client flexibility. With the complaint now before the PCC and calls for mayoral intervention, the outcome could shape how event suppliers operate at the venue. The hotel's next steps remain unclear as suppliers await a resolution.
