CDU and Left Party face pressure from SPD politicians to rethink their strategy in AFD polls - CDU's rivals, the SPD, urge fresh strategies as AfD garner significant support in latest polls
The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has called upon the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to reconsider its political stance towards the Left Party, advocating for a more cooperative relationship.
In a series of statements, SPD politicians have emphasized the importance of democrats being coalition-capable among each other. Olaf Scholz, a prominent SPD politician, underscored this point, emphasizing the need for democrats to always be coalition-capable among each other.
Sebastian Fiedler, the interior policy spokesman of the SPD parliamentary group, stated that it would be "highly desirable" for the Union to reconsider its stance on the Left. Similarly, economic policy spokesman Sebastian Roloff claimed that the incompatibility resolution of the Union towards the Left party is "outdated and counterproductive".
The CDU, on the other hand, has historically excluded coalitions and similar forms of cooperation with both the AfD and the Left, as stated in an incompatibility resolution from 2018. However, recent developments have raised questions about the CDU's stance towards the Left Party.
Ines Schwerdtner, chairwoman of the Left party, proposed a new analysis of the CDU’s position towards the Left party, revealing that CDU members had begged the Left party to support the chancellor election. This proposal was made publicly in a ZDF summer interview in May 2025.
The need for a two-thirds majority in the Bundestag for the coalition-agreed reform of the debt brake is highlighted. In such scenarios, the SPD may find it beneficial to have the Left's approval in the Bundestag.
The SPD's advocacy for a more inclusive political approach, including the Left Party, is not a new development. They have been suggesting a new approach from the CDU towards the Left Party, aiming to foster a more cooperative relationship.
The Handelsblatt, a reputable source of information, has reported on these statements made by SPD politicians regarding the CDU and the Left Party. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the CDU responds to these calls for a reassessment of its stance on the Left Party.
