Caught Red-Handed: Cell Phone Burglar Nabbed via Video Surveillance Evidence
In the Kalk district of Cologne, a 24-year-old individual of Algerian origin was arrested on August 20. The arrest was made by a patrol team, bolstered by the support of the video control center.
According to reports, the suspect is accused of two separate thefts in the city. The first incident occurred on August 19 in the city center, where a 26-year-old cyclist had a backpack stolen from their bike basket. The stolen items included a backpack and a phone.
Just a day after the first theft, on August 20, another incident took place. This time, the suspect is accused of stealing a bag containing cash and a phone from a 25-year-old cyclist's bike basket. The theft occurred on a bicycle, similar to the one observed around 8:45 AM on Hohenzollernring.
The suspect was recognized by analysts from the police's video surveillance system after both thefts. Video observers discovered these incidents on the recordings.
The August 20 theft also shares similarities with the August 19 incident. Both involved thefts from bicycles, and the stolen items in the August 20 incident were a bag containing cash, similar to the items stolen in the August 19 incident.
The suspect is expected to be brought before an examining judge later in the day for both thefts he is accused of. However, the search results do not contain information about the investigating judge responsible for the 24-year-old man of Algerian origin who is to appear in court on the day of publication.
This marks the second arrest made by the patrol team with the support of the video control center in the Kalk district this month. The first arrest was made on August 10, resulting in the apprehension of a different suspect.
As the investigation continues, the Cologne police are urging cyclists to be vigilant and to secure their belongings while cycling in the city. They remind the public that any suspicious activities should be reported to the authorities immediately.
