Catholic school shooting leaves parents and clergy in Minneapolis facing difficult aftermath
In a shocking turn of events, a school shooting occurred at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis on Aug. 27, 2025. The tight-knit community, both as a parish and school, and as a neighborhood where many school families live nearby, was left reeling from the senseless act.
Jiyun Kim, a member of Korean Catholic St. Andrew Kim Parish, visited Annunciation's memorial with her children. She feels a deep connection to the community due to the ages of her children and worries about attending Mass every weekend. "I believe our community grows stronger through times of tragedy," she said, "We support each other to heal."
The suspected shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the church's parking lot, and the motive for the shooting is currently under investigation by law enforcement.
The tragedy claimed the lives of two students, Fletcher Merkel (aged 8) and Harper Moyski (aged 10). The community has set up a memorial outside the church with flowers, stuffed animals, toys, and candles. Visitors have been writing messages on large pads of paper and the sidewalk, expressing their condolences and prayers.
Parents rushed to the scene when they heard about the shooting, some even running. Bishop Izen was called to Children's Minnesota Hospital to offer anointing of the sick to an injured Annunciation student. St. Paul and Minneapolis Auxiliary Bishop Kevin T. Kenney also went to HCMC after the shooting, offering support to families. Father Rutten, a Catholic clergy member, ministered at Hennepin County Medical Center, offering comfort to families in the waiting room.
Felix, a student at Annunciation Catholic School, recounted his experience during the shooting, including seeing a friend get hit and someone covered in blood. Mary, a Catholic, expressed her support for six-year-old Felix, stating that the church is a safe place and that he has people behind him.
Janet Parker, an Annunciation parishioner and former teacher, attended the basilica's prayer service. She found it strange to see her community in the news in this way. Bishop Izen preached at a noon prayer service in St. Paul, addressing the questions on the minds of many Twin Cities Catholics and emphasizing the presence of Jesus during times of suffering.
Dennis Zehren, the pastor of Annunciation parish in Minneapolis, was present during the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School. He publicly described his efforts and has since led his parish through the tragedy. Benjamin Bozer, Mary's brother, wept as he heard his nephew's account of the shooting. He expressed concern about the senseless nature of the incident.
Eighteen others, including 15 children and three adults in their 80s, were injured and treated at nearby hospitals. One victim remains in critical condition, and two others are in serious condition. The community stands united, offering support and prayers to each other during this difficult time.
