Catastrophic Earthquakes in Afghanistan Claim Approximately 250 Lives, Reports Local Government body
In the early hours of May 1, 2023, a powerful earthquake struck the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 6.0, occurred at a depth of eight kilometers.
The state news agency Bachtar reported that at least 250 people lost their lives in the disaster, with around 500 more injured in the province of Kunar. Tragically, this is not an isolated incident for the region, as it has been prone to severe earthquakes in the past.
Just a year prior, on October 7, 2022, another earthquake series in Afghanistan resulted in more than 1,500 fatalities. And in 2022, over 1,000 people perished in an earthquake in the same country.
The earthquake occurred at midnight in a geologically active region where the Arabian, Indian, and Eurasian plates converge, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity. The earthquake's epicentre was reported to be on the border with Pakistan.
The Afghan government, international aid organisations, and the global community are now working together to provide relief and support to those affected by this devastating disaster. The focus is on providing medical assistance, food, shelter, and other essential resources to those in need.
As the aftermath of the earthquake unfolds, the world stands in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan during this difficult time. The hope is that the international community will come together to help rebuild and support the affected communities in their recovery efforts.
