Catastrophe at Gloria Elevator: 15 Fatalities, 18 Injuries Reported
In a shocking incident that has left the city of Lisbon in mourning, the Glory Elevator, a popular means of transport connecting Restauradores to Príncipe Real, derailed on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident, which took place on Glory Street, has claimed the lives of 15 individuals, according to the INEM's confirmation. Among the victims are both Portuguese and foreigners. The operator of the Glory Elevator, operated by the Lisbon public transport company Carris, has identified the deceased brake operator as André Jorge Gonçalves Marques.
The incident also resulted in 18 injuries, including a child. The injured were transported to various hospitals across Lisbon, with Santa Maria Hospital, São José Hospital, and São Francisco Xavier Hospital receiving casualties.
