Car with Implanted Hearing Technology

The Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology (IDMT) in Germany is developing a groundbreaking project known as 'The Hearing Car'. This innovative vehicle is designed to perceive sounds in its environment, such as sirens, playing children, or changes in the driver's condition, without the need for a clear view.

At the heart of the project is the 'YourSound' system, which adapts sound individually to the hearing preferences of occupants, eliminating the need for complex settings. Researchers are working on speaker recognition and AI to recognize acoustic events, ensuring the car can effectively navigate its surroundings.

The quality of signals and filtering out of disturbing noises are key aspects of the 'Hearing Car' project. The vehicle is equipped with technology that can monitor the condition of its occupants using short-range radar to measure heartbeat, breathing, and movements, as well as a mobile EEG system to detect brain waves and identify attention lapses.

Voice analysis in the 'Hearing Car' identifies stress or excitement in drivers and provides appropriate feedback, aiming to promote a safer and more attentive driving experience. The project also includes the ability to analyse the acoustic environment, recognising human voices or sounds in traffic-calmed zones.

The development of the 'Hearing Car' is supported by the "Vorab" program of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation. The KI4BoardNet project, which deals with intelligent energy and data on-board networks, is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR).

The 'Hearing Car' is being developed in collaboration with car manufacturers and suppliers, marking a significant step forward in the automotive industry. Alexandra Ilina, a journalist and translator with over 20 years of experience, is the author of the article covering this exciting development.

Next week, the prototype of the 'Hearing Car' will be presented at IAA MOBILITY in Munich. Visitors can see the demo vehicle in Hall A2, Stand C10 from September 9 to 12. The 'Hearing Car' represents a significant leap in automotive technology, making cars safer and more attentive by adding the ability to 'hear' their surroundings.
