Candidates Vying for Positions in Albuquerque's City Council

Albuquerque, New Mexico is gearing up for its upcoming City Council elections on November 4, with four contests featuring a diverse slate of candidates.

In District 5, incumbent Councilor Dan Lewis is seeking reelection, having regained the seat in 2021 after holding it from 2009-2017. Challenging Lewis is Athenea Allen, a national security professional who has conducted background investigations for agencies including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. Lewis's key priorities include community safety, road improvements, community infrastructure, and economic growth.

Meanwhile, in District 1, the vacant seat left by Councilor Louie Sanchez, who is running for mayor, will see up to four candidates vying for the open seat. Among them are Daniel Leiva, a UNM law graduate who has qualified for public funding, Ahren Griego, a former firefighter, Joshua Taylor Neal, and Charlotte Winsor. Sanchez's focus on community safety and infrastructure development is likely to be a key issue in the race.

In District 3, Klarissa Penña is running for re-election, with Teresa Garcia, a newcomer, also in the running. Garcia's focus on protecting immigrant rights, updating infrastructure, and promoting economic development could provide a fresh perspective in the district.

Elsewhere, Christopher Sedillo, a retired U.S. Navy veteran, is running for a council seat in Albuquerque's District 5. Sedillo has worked in advocacy for LGBTQ+ service members and other veterans' groups, and his campaign focuses on promoting equality, community engagement, and veteran support.

In District 9, incumbent Councilor Reneé Grout is facing a challenge from Colton Newman. Grout, who has lived in District 9 for more than four decades, has prioritised tackling crime, homelessness, and economic development in Albuquerque. Newman, a business manager for UNM's Center on Alcohol, Substance Use and Addiction, is focusing on the rising cost of living, community safety, and building climate resilience.

Finally, District 7 Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn will run unopposed in the upcoming elections.
