Campus Shooter Identified: Police Confirm Details about the 5'5 Asian Individual Involved in Massachusetts University Shooting Incident as Rumors Spread Online

In an unexpected turn of events, the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass) found itself in the midst of a campus-wide lockdown on the first day of classes. The lockdown was instigated due to reports about a potential active shooter on campus.

The Lowell Police Department swiftly took over the investigation, validating the visuals captured online that showed a male suspect carrying a long gun behind the Riverview Suites Residence Hall. However, it's important to note that the authorities have yet to formally determine the suspect's identity or name him.

A student was the first to call 911 after witnessing the development, setting off a chain of events that led to the lockdown. The suspect was initially described as an Asian male, approximately 5'5'' tall, wearing a gray or white sweatshirt and black shorts, as per a video that surfaced on September 3 (US time).

Despite the initial alarm, UMass Lowell Police Chief Ron Dickerson later confirmed that the incident was not an active shooter incident. Thankfully, no evidence of any gunshots being fired was discovered on the scene.

Authorities believe the suspect is no longer in the vicinity, but a large police presence has been maintained on campus overnight, with officers stationed at all residence halls. This precautionary measure was also reported by NBC Boston.

In the wake of this incident, all classes and events at UMass Lowell were cancelled on Wednesday. As of recent updates, the lockdown and shelter in place have been lifted.

The investigation, however, is ongoing, with city, state police, and the FBI Boston also involved. They are working diligently to gather more information from the circulating video on social media and identify the suspect.

The University administration has yet to comment on the race or ethnicity of the suspect, emphasising that the focus remains on ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the campus community.

This incident serves as a reminder for the UMass Lowell community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The University has also reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
