California overhauls K-12 math education to close achievement gaps
California has taken a major step to strengthen math education across its schools. The State Board of Education recently approved a list of high-quality math materials for K-12 classrooms. While the new framework and resources offer guidance, they remain optional for districts to adopt.
The move comes as math performance in the state lags behind much of the country. Only two states score lower than California in 8th-grade math, with persistent gaps affecting economically disadvantaged students, students of colour, and English learners. The updated Math Framework and state-reviewed materials aim to reverse years of decline. Business leaders have backed the push, citing the need for a workforce skilled in math. STEM-related careers are growing 3.5 times faster than non-STEM jobs, with median salaries more than double the national average.
Math proficiency is increasingly vital, as nearly every fast-growing field demands strong math skills. Occupations in math-intensive roles already pay over twice the median wage of all jobs. The state's approval signals a commitment to closing achievement gaps and preparing students for future opportunities.
Los Angeles Unified School District has already seen progress with high-quality math curricula. Hispanic students and English learners in the district showed improved proficiency after adopting better materials. However, implementing these resources statewide will require collaboration between educators, families, civic leaders, and businesses. The new math materials provide a foundation for improvement, but their impact depends on widespread adoption. Schools and communities will need to work together to ensure students benefit from stronger instruction. With STEM careers expanding rapidly, better math education could help secure California's economic future.
