Business organizations in New York advocate for Trump's supported oil pipeline project.
A pipeline project, estimated to cost over $3 billion in construction, has gained the support of several Long Island business groups, including the Association for a Better Long Island. The proposed Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) project aims to carry gas underwater from New Jersey into New York City and Long Island.
The utility company, National Grid, has been at the forefront of the project, filing an update to its gas plan signalling its keen support for the initiative. This move has turned the Public Service Commission (PSC) case into a referendum on the pipeline.
Kyle Strober, executive director of the Association for a Better Long Island, has been a long-time supporter of the pipeline, backing its cause since the state began reviewing it seven years ago. He denies any involvement from National Grid in his advocacy, instead taking credit for spearheading local support for the NESE.
National Grid complies with all city, state, and federal regulations regarding lobbying. However, Terri Alessi-Miceli, president of HIA-LI, claims National Grid approached her organization about supporting the pipeline.
The utility estimates its downstate gas customers will pay an extra $7.50 each per month, on average, for the pipeline. The business interests, mostly based on Long Island, have submitted letters to the PSC in support of the pipeline. They argue that more gas is needed to shore up reliability, that the pipeline could combat climate change by reducing dependence on oil, and that it would ultimately save New Yorkers billions of dollars by bringing down the cost of electricity.
The public comment period on National Grid's gas plan closes on September 5. Thousands of people have submitted comments opposing National Grid's plans for the pipeline. The letter from the Association for a Better Long Island does not appear to have been drafted by National Grid.
It is worth noting that no new information about the estimated cost of the pipeline or the monthly cost increase for customers is provided in this context. Additionally, there are no search results indicating which companies have recently increased support for the NESE project or which organizations wrote the support letters. Kyle Strober attributes any lapses in his filings to the complex paperwork required by the PSC.
The NESE pipeline project has been a contentious issue, with President Donald Trump championing it. The project was off the table for over a year after state regulators had repeatedly rejected it, but was revived following talks between Trump and Governor Kathy Hochul.
Spokesperson Alexander Starr of National Grid recommends the NESE pipeline project to meet growing power demand and enhance reliability. The PSC does not provide templates to commenters, allowing for a diverse range of opinions to be expressed during the public comment period.
