In a significant move towards enhancing public transport in Herford County, the newly established Herford County Transportation Company GmbH has announced plans to purchase over 30 buses by 2026.

The company, founded by Herford County at the beginning of 2024, aims to shape mobility offerings in line with the needs of the county's citizens. The goal is to increase the use of public transport and reach new target groups.

One of the key areas of focus for the company is the school bus service. Line 463, which transports students from Municipal Realschule and Widukind Gymnasium daily, will see changes as the current concession holder's contract ends on July 11, 2025. VKH, the company taking over, has already procured a new bus for the service, named "Widukindstadt Enger".

The buses will be gradually deployed in the route bundles for which the concessions are expiring. However, the company that will take over bus line 463 in Enger from August 2026 is yet to be announced.

In addition to traditional bus services, VKH plans to introduce on-demand services such as car-sharing or autonomous vehicles to complement the mobility offerings. Emission-free vehicles are also planned to be used by the transportation company.

The city of Enger is pleased with VKH's takeover, as school bus lines are a crucial part of public transport. The employees of the transportation company are currently based in the county house, and they will move into their own premises in the future.

It's worth noting that VKH is not responsible for public passenger transport in the cities of Herford and Bünde. The company will no longer acquire bus concessions on a commercial basis in the future.

The first buses of the transportation company are expected to hit the roads in the county area from August 2026, marking a significant step towards improving public transport and meeting the needs of Herford County's citizens.
