Man Accused of Assaulting Two Bus Drivers in Freiburg
A 23-year-old man in Freiburg is facing accusations of injuring two bus drivers in a dispute over an allegedly early departure. The incident occurred at a bus stop in the Littenweiler district, according to police.
The trouble began when the suspect, aged 23, initially attacked a bus driver (43) at the bus stop. The man had previously confronted the bus driver about the supposedly early departure at a previous stop.
The altercation escalated, with the man striking the windshield of the public bus with a metal object, shattering it. The suspect also claimed to have left his phone on the bus, which further fuelled the argument.
During the altercation, the windshield of the bus was shattered, and both bus drivers were injured. When a second driver (57) came to his colleague's aid, he was also attacked and thrown off the bus.
Several witnesses called the police after the incident, and both drivers were further injured and had to be taken to the hospital. The exact nature and severity of their injuries are currently unknown.
The police officer who arrested the suspect was a member of the Federal Police conducting a routine control at Offenburg train station; the arrest happened on a Tuesday shortly after the suspect was entered into the police search system.
The damaged bus was no longer operational, causing disruptions in public transport. The 23-year-old was provisionally arrested by the police. Several witnesses provided statements, which will be crucial in the ongoing investigation.
