The driver of the VW Passat, a 75-year-old man from Leipzig, was driving towards the city center. Despite emergency braking, the bus driver could not prevent a collision with the Passat, which had illegally crossed the solid line from the left to the right lane.

After passing Holstentor, the VW Passat driver, intending to continue straight towards Holstenstraße, made a sudden lane change. The police have initiated an investigation against the driver for reckless bodily injury in several cases and violations of lane usage rules.
