Bus crash leaves eight passengers injured near Holstentor, reported by Polish police

In the heart of Lübeck, on August 27, 2025, a traffic accident occurred that left eight passengers on a city bus injured. The incident took place near the iconic Holstentor, involving a city bus and a VW Passat.

According to initial investigations, the cause of the accident was a sudden lane change by the VW Passat. At around 18:05, a 75-year-old man from Leipzig was driving his gray VW Passat in the direction of the city center of Lübeck. Disregarding traffic lane regulations, he illegally crossed the solid line from the left lane to the right lane, intending to continue straight towards Holstenstraße, directly into the path of the oncoming city bus.

Despite the bus driver's immediate emergency braking, a collision was unavoidable. The total material damage from the accident has not yet been determined, but both the bus and the Passat were still roadworthy.

Seven passengers on the bus were slightly injured, and one woman was taken to the hospital with suspected serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Remarkably, neither the driver of the VW Passat, his passenger, nor the bus driver were injured in the accident.

Several emergency medical teams were on site to treat the injured. The road was reopened at around 18:50 after the accident investigation and treatment of the injured.

The police have initiated an investigation against the driver of the VW Passat on suspicion of multiple counts of reckless bodily injury and violations of traffic lane regulations. The investigation is ongoing.
