Burgoyne and Valley Christian dominate La Mirada in the third quarter, securing a double-digit victory in the Girls Basketball match.

On December 18, 2024, the Valley Christian High girls basketball team faced off against La Mirada High in a thrilling game. The match marked just the second time in at least 27 seasons that the two teams had met, with the only other encounter being in 2016, a 58-23 Valley Christian High victory.

In this rematch, the game was tightly contested, with the first half ending in a tie at 18-18. However, it was Valley Christian High who took the lead in the second half, thanks to the impressive performance of Hannah Burgoyne.

Burgoyne finished the game with a stellar stat line of 31 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Her third three-pointer of the game put Valley Christian High in the lead for good at 26-23 with 5:04 left in the third quarter. In the third quarter alone, Burgoyne scored four three-pointers and a two-pointer, outscoring La Mirada High by two points in that period.

Coach Leffler emphasized the importance of league play for the team, while Coach Luong expressed frustration with the team's inconsistency and difficulty in changing their mindset. Despite these challenges, the team has shown signs of improvement, having won three out of their last five games.

The team's record stands at 4-6, and they will look to continue their winning streak when they face Ramona High on Friday in the Challenge for CHOC Showcase at Sonora High. They will also entertain Savanna High on Saturday.

Meanwhile, La Mirada High had standout performances from Jaiya Lee, who scored 9 points and pulled down 8 rebounds, and Emily Gonzalez, who scored 6 points before fouling out late in the game. Unfortunately, there is no available information on which player scored the most points for the Defenders in this game.

As the season progresses, Valley Christian High will aim to finish as a top three finisher to secure a spot in the playoffs. The team is determined to build on their recent success and continue their upward trajectory in the league.
