In the heart of Düsseldorf, a significant event unfolded today as 420 recruits took their oath in front of the state parliament. This public ceremony, a first of its kind, replaced the usual barracks setting, due to a motion approved by the Landtag in 2022.

The recruits were seen lining up for a rehearsal before the ceremony, their combat uniforms and tents in camouflage colours a stark contrast against the backdrop of the state parliament. The Bundeswehr, aiming to be more visible, was showcasing its equipment and capabilities, with a Leopard 2 tank and other military vehicles on display. Visitors were given the opportunity to examine drones up close.

Brigade General Hans-Dieter Müller stated that the aim was to increase visibility, while Bundeswehr spokesman Ulrich Fonrobert described the event as a "strong sign" of new recruits joining the force. The ceremony was also a significant event, according to Landtag President André Kuper.

However, the ceremony was not without controversy. The youth initiative "Jugend gegen Rechtsruck Düsseldorf" and the Left party are planning a protest action. Their opposition is against armament, militarization, and right-wing tendencies, but not a general criticism of the German Armed Forces.

The protest is scheduled to take place in front of the state parliament on Friday. The organization is calling for a demonstration against armament, militarization, and right-wing tendencies during the Bundeswehr oath ceremony planned for September 4th.

In the afternoon, Minister President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) is scheduled to give an oath speech. The event is expected to attract over 1,400 spectators, including a family from Kentucky in the USA.

As the recruits prepare to take their oath, the oath of loyalty is a legal requirement at the end of basic training. Refusing to speak the words during the oath can lead to exclusion from promotions, supportive measures, dismissal, and loss of rank.

This is the largest oath ceremony of the Bundeswehr in Germany this year, marking a significant moment in the nation's defense capabilities and a testament to the ongoing discussions about the role of the German Armed Forces in today's world.
