The European Union Commission has announced plans to revise the CO2 emission performance standards for new cars and vans, as well as the Car Labelling Directive. This move is part of the Commission's preparations for the Regulation's review, which is intended to support manufacturers in meeting their CO2 emission targets and promote the uptake of zero-emission vehicles.

The review of the Car Labelling Directive is based on a robust evidence base, taking into account technological developments and the need for an economically viable and socially fair transition towards zero-emission mobility. The search results do not provide information about who announced this development, but the news was confirmed by the EU Commission.

The current CO2 standards aim to contribute to the EU's greenhouse gas emission reduction objectives for 2030 and the path to climate neutrality by 2050. The standards are part of Regulation (EU) 2023/851, which amends Regulation (EU) 2019/631. They promote the uptake of zero-emission vehicles and stimulate innovation in clean technologies.

The review of the Car Labelling Directive is also part of Regulation (EU) 2023/851. It is designed to better inform consumers about CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency of new vehicles. The EU Commission is seeking to simplify rules and reduce administrative burden where appropriate, with feedback from the public playing a crucial role in the Commission's evaluation and review of the Car Labelling Directive.

EU citizens and stakeholders are invited to submit their views on the Car Labelling Directive via the Have Your Say Portal until 29 September 2025. Feedback from the public consultation will be used in the evaluation and review of both the CO2 emission standards for cars and vans and the Car Labelling Directive.

The automotive sector is crucial for the EU economy, accounting for €1 trillion in GDP and providing around 13 million jobs. The standards are designed to strengthen the sector's global competitiveness and support quality job creation in the EU. The review of the Car Labelling Directive is also aimed at increasing deployment of zero-emission vehicles in the EU.

The review of the Car Labelling Directive will build on the findings of its evaluation published on 4 June 2025. The Commission's preparations for the Regulation's review also include the public consultation, which is open until 29 September 2025. By working together, the EU aims to create a more sustainable and competitive automotive industry for the future.
