Bruno Marchand takes leadership role.
Quebec's Mayor Bruno Marchand Prepares for Re-election Amidst Controversy and Success
Bruno Marchand, the current mayor of Quebec, is wrapping up his first term and preparing for re-election in the upcoming municipal elections. Known for his running shoes and unwavering determination, Marchand has governed with courage, refusing easy choices but also stirring anger.
During his term, the city's public finances have been praised by the rating agency Moody's, with Quebec having the ability to pay its share of the tramway in cash. The city has experienced the lowest increase in residential taxes among major cities in Quebec over the past four years, a testament to Marchand's fiscal responsibility.
Under his administration, the capital started more housing units in the past 20 years, with over 5,000 units this year. The objective of adding 80,000 housing units by 2040 has been increased to 100,000, demonstrating Marchand's commitment to addressing the city's housing needs. Moreover, over 2,300 affordable social housing units were built during his term.
Marchand has embraced unpopular causes such as raising the registration tax and studying an increase in the fuel tax. These decisions, once contested, are now claimed as badges of honour, as they have contributed to the replenishment of the Capital Transport Network's coffers and the improvement of mobility.
The last poll conducted by Segma in June indicated a close race between Marchand and former Liberal minister Sam Hamad. With 29% of those surveyed still undecided, no candidate can yet claim victory in the mayoral election.
Despite facing a fragmented opposition, Marchand has a party with sufficient candidates to compose "two or three teams." He is convinced he is the man capable of maintaining Quebec's momentum and perceives the city as a successful one.
However, Marchand's term has not been without controversy. His decisions have stirred anger, but he has never succumbed to easy choices at the expense of necessary ones. As he prepares for re-election, he carries the weight of his past decisions and the hope of a future vision for Quebec.
As for the 2025 municipal elections, there is currently no information available regarding the candidates or Marchand's direct rival. The city awaits the unfolding of the election campaign with anticipation.
In the meantime, Marchand continues to run, undeterred by the challenges he has faced during his term, which included a global pandemic, inflation not seen in 40 years, and a trade war with Uncle Sam. He has no intention of slowing down or changing course. Instead, he is focused on maintaining Quebec's momentum and ensuring a prosperous future for its residents.
