British Tourist Drowns in Cartagena During Colombian Holiday Tragedy
A 30-year-old British man, James Michael Winkles, has died in a drowning accident while holidaying in Colombia. His body was discovered on a beach near El Laguito, a coastal area in Cartagena, shortly after he went missing in rough seas on 22 March. Authorities have since confirmed the incident as a tragic accident.
James arrived in El Laguito with his partner and friends on 9 March, planning to enjoy the trip and celebrate an upcoming wedding. The couple had intended to marry during their stay, though it remains unconfirmed whether the ceremony took place before his death.
On the afternoon of 22 March, James entered the water to swim. Conditions were hazardous, with strong waves creating dangerous currents. He quickly disappeared from sight. A search began immediately, but his lifeless body was found shortly afterwards on a nearby stretch of shore. An autopsy was later carried out at a forensic institute in Cartagena to establish the precise cause of death. Investigators concluded that drowning was responsible, ruling out any suspicious circumstances. Local officials have since reminded visitors of the risks posed by the sea, even in popular tourist spots.
The incident has highlighted the potential dangers of swimming in areas prone to powerful currents. While no formal warnings exist for El Laguito, authorities continue to urge caution for those entering the water. James' death serves as a stark reminder of how quickly conditions can turn deadly, even for experienced swimmers.
