British Museum's first fundraising ball blends Met Gala glamour with UK heritage

London's cultural scene is set to welcome a new highlight this weekend. The British Museum will host its first-ever fundraising ball on Saturday, aiming to rival the Met Gala with a distinctly British twist. Organisers describe the event as blending 'Met Gala ambition with UK uniqueness' to celebrate the city's global reputation for arts and culture.

The star-studded evening will also serve a practical purpose: raising funds for the museum's international projects, including plans to display the Bayeux Tapestry next year. Guests will pay £2,000 each to attend—far less than the Met Gala's $75,000 tickets. For their contribution, they'll enjoy a drinks reception and dinner seated among the museum's historic artefacts. A silent auction will feature exclusive items, such as a Tracey Emin portrait of the highest bidder's dog and private access to Coco Chanel's Paris apartment.

The event's theme, 'pink', draws inspiration from the colours and light of India. Isha Ambani, daughter of Asia's wealthiest man, Mukesh Ambani, chairs the ball. She is joined by a high-profile committee that includes Naomi Campbell, Miuccia Prada, Manolo Blahnik, and Sonam Kapoor.

Beyond the glamour, the ball supports the museum's broader goals. Funds raised will help secure international partnerships and may contribute to a £1-billion redevelopment plan. The museum has not confirmed whether the redevelopment will rely entirely on private funding, but the event signals a push for new financial backing. The British Museum's fundraising ball arrives as a bold addition to London's social calendar. With its mix of celebrity influence, cultural ambition, and financial goals, the event could set a precedent for future high-profile fundraisers in the city. Proceeds will directly aid the museum's plans, starting with the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition in 2025.
