Breathtaking Scenery at Tennessee State Park Compares Favorably with Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Roan Mountain State Park: A Haven for Outdoor Enthusiasts
Roan Mountain State Park, nestled in the picturesque town of Roan Mountain, Tennessee, is a nature lover's paradise. This 6.6-square-mile park offers a variety of activities and accommodations that cater to all types of visitors.
The park's main attractions are its outdoor adventures. Hiking enthusiasts will find about 12 miles of day-use trails, providing ample opportunities to explore the park's lush gardens and breathtaking landscapes. For cyclists, there are 3 miles of designated biking paths, including the Blue 2 and Moonshiners Run bike trails.
Campers should expect crowds during the fall foliage season and on busy weekends at the Lower Campground. This camping area, open year-round, offers amenities such as fire rings, restrooms, picnic tables, tent pads, grills, a dump station, RV hookups, and Wi-Fi. Those seeking a more comfortable stay can opt for the park's 30 cabin rentals located off Tennessee Highway 143.
These cabins, equipped with kitchens, beds, full bathrooms, wood-burning stoves, air conditioning, and heating, offer a cosy retreat. While they do not have televisions, guests can enjoy the playground and tennis court available within the park. Ten of the park's cabin rentals are pet-friendly, and two are ADA-compliant, but people with mobility concerns may want to call the park before booking.
Anglers can cast their lines in the Doe or Watauga rivers within the park, with catfish, walleye, rainbow trout, and bass available. The park also offers seasonal spaces for cross-country skiing, making it a four-season destination.
Roan Mountain State Park is easily accessible from Watauga Lake, one of Tennessee's top places for kayaking. The park is positioned about two-thirds of the way between North Carolina's Asheville Regional Airport and Tennessee's Tri-Cities Airport, making it convenient for travellers.
Visitors to Roan Mountain State Park will also have the opportunity to tour historic farmsteads and access the Appalachian Trail for a memorable hiking experience. However, a first-timer's trail guide should be consulted before embarking on the trail.
Please note that the Upper Campground in Roan Mountain State Park is currently closed due to damage from Hurricane Helene. Despite this, the park remains open for visitors to enjoy its numerous attractions.
Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, a nature lover, or a family looking for a peaceful getaway, Roan Mountain State Park offers something for everyone. So pack your bags and prepare for an unforgettable adventure in the heart of Tennessee's beautiful wilderness.
