Bread & Puppet Theater's 2025 tour defies political tensions with bold activism
The Bread & Puppet Theater is preparing for its 2025 fall tour, featuring a politically charged circus titled Our Domestic Resurrection Revolution In Progress. The long-running troupe, known for its activist roots, will bring its pro-Palestinian show to three to five US cities, with the main event in Glover, Vermont. This year's performances arrive amid growing concerns about artistic freedom after a recent White House memo on domestic extremism.
For over fifty years, the Bread & Puppet Theater has staged its annual Fall Circus, blending theatre with protest. Since the Vietnam War, the group has used performances to oppose conflict and inequality. The 2025 production continues this tradition with sketches targeting billionaires and backing American labour unions.
The tour usually stops in nearby cities like Boston and New York before concluding in Glover. After each show, performers hand out free sourdough bread—a signature gesture of the company. This year's run, however, faces new tensions. A White House memo recently tied domestic terrorism to anti-American, anti-capitalist, and anti-Christian beliefs. Members of the theatre now fear the memo could threaten their right to free expression.
The circus will proceed as planned, with performances set for Vermont and other locations. Audience members can expect the usual mix of bold political commentary and freshly baked bread. Yet the troupe's concerns over government scrutiny add a new layer of urgency to this year's tour.
