Botswana Launches Bold Five-Year Plan to Curb Problem Gambling

The Gambling Authority of Botswana has taken a major step in tackling excessive gambling by hosting a workshop at the Masa Square Hotel. The event marked the launch of its 2023–2028 Strategy for Excessive Gambling Prevention and Rehabilitation, bringing together regulators, operators, and key stakeholders to align efforts in reducing gambling-related harm. The workshop aimed to create a shared understanding of responsible gambling practices. Operators received detailed briefings on their regulatory duties, including the need for stronger player protection, public awareness campaigns, and contributions to prevention initiatives.

Central to the strategy is a focus on evidence-based programs designed to curb addictive behaviours. The Authority stressed the role of research and data in identifying risk factors, ensuring policies are grounded in real-world insights. Support systems, such as professional counselling and self-exclusion schemes, will also be expanded to help affected individuals. By fostering closer collaboration, the Authority seeks to improve oversight, transparency, and compliance across the gambling sector. The long-term goal is to build a sustainable and socially responsible gambling environment in Botswana.

The five-year plan sets clear expectations for operators while reinforcing the Authority's commitment to harm reduction. Enhanced rehabilitation services and stricter regulatory measures will now be rolled out to protect vulnerable individuals. The initiative reflects a coordinated push to balance industry growth with community well-being.
