Border control operations conducted by the federal police in NRW result in the execution of arrest warrants issued by BPOL NRW
On a Friday evening in August 2025, two foreign nationals were stopped by the German Federal Police during separate incidents in the regions of Kleve, Kempen, Emmerich, Straelen, and Kranenburg.
The first individual, a 22-year-old Latvian, entered Germany via the Elten-Autobahn border crossing on August 22. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the Latvian was not a German citizen and had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for serving a prison sentence for drunk driving, issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office in Lübeck. The Latvian's car, registered in Latvia, was found to have several traffic violations, and he could not pay a fine of 2100 euros. After the conclusion of the police measures at the station in Kleve, the driver's license was secured, and the Latvian was delivered to the prison in Kleve to serve his 35-day sentence.
In a separate incident on Saturday afternoon, August 23, the Federal Police stopped a 28-year-old Czech on the A40. The Czech was wanted with an arrest warrant by the Public Prosecutor's Office in Hof for a violation of the Narcotics Act. However, the Czech paid a fine of 975 euros to the Federal Police and was allowed to continue his journey.
The incidents involved the Federal Police Directorate Sankt Augustin and were carried out in accordance with the Federal Police Act (BPolG) and related national and European legal frameworks such as the Schengen Borders Code. On September 16, 2024, the Federal Police temporarily reintroduced border controls at all land-based Schengen internal borders, on the order of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

In the second incident, the Portuguese presented a valid Portuguese passport and a completely forged Angolan driver's license. The Portuguese was allowed to continue his journey, but his further travel was prohibited. The incident occurred on the B9 in Kranenburg.
These incidents highlight the importance of border controls in ensuring the safety and security of the country, as well as upholding the law. The authority responsible for carrying out border controls at land borders within the Schengen area in Germany is the Federal Police (Bundespolizei).
