Catching Up with Lena Evans
Lena Evans stumbled upon poker in her mid-forties during a casual meeting in California. Her partner, enamored with the game, introduced her to the world of poker. As she delved deeper into the game, she discovered its captivating intellectual challenge.
"I found poker's intrigue in how it exercises memory, focus, strategic thinking, and emotional regulation. The more I played, the more I realized that poker was more than just entertainmentโit nurtured my brain health and cognitive development," Evans shared with PokerNews.
Recently, Evans sat down with PokerNews for a riveting Q&A.

PokerNews: What led you to pen this book?
Lena Evans: In 2021, I received a unique opportunity: I was invited to speak at a TEDx conference. I decided to share my thoughts on an intriguing topic, so I chose "The Power of Poker: The Unexpected Benefits for Brain Health." Preparing for the talk inspired me to explore poker's cognitive and emotional benefits further.
The outpouring of support for my TEDx talk spurred me to expand on the ideas I shared on stage and create a more comprehensive guide on how poker can serve as a powerful tool for brain health and emotional growth.
Why is this topic of interest to you?
In my personal journey and research for my TEDx presentation, I discovered the profound impact poker can have on cognitive development. As I continued to immerse myself in the science behind poker, I understood its potential to redefine the way we think about brain health, especially for women and older adults.
"I am dedicated to shining a light on poker's ability to promote cognitive stimulation and emotional resilience. This book is my way of opening up the world of poker to so many who can reap its benefits."
Statistics indicate that women account for 66% of the six million people worldwide diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Nevertheless, they remain underrepresented in discussions about brain health and cognitive engagement. My mission is to amplify their voices and encourage all to engage in activities that foster cognitive development.
As the founder of the Poker League of Nations, a world-renowned organization aimed at empowering women through poker, I am passionate about advocating for mental wellbeing and encouraging individuals, particularly women and older adults, to embrace activities that challenge the mind and build emotional resilience.
Poker challenges the status quo and becomes a beacon for personal growth and brain fitness. It is a social, empowering experience that taps into the power of the brain and fosters emotional resilience, making a significant difference in our lives.
What was the most challenging part of writing this book?
The most challenging part of writing this book was striking the right balance between academic insights and personal stories. I wanted the content to be accessible and engaging while still maintaining depth and nuance. My goal has always been to inspire readers to embrace the game's potential for cognitive development, making it an essential part of their lives.
