Boeing receives significant order from Korean Air, aimed at boosting growth after the merger.
Korean Air has made a significant move in the aviation industry, announcing its intent to purchase 103 new Boeing aircraft. This landmark deal marks the carrier's largest aircraft order to date and Boeing's biggest widebody order from an Asian airline.
The agreement, which includes 20 Boeing 777-9s, 25 Boeing 787-10s, 50 Boeing 737-10s, and eight Boeing 777-8 Freighters, is a pivotal moment for Korean Air, according to Walter Cho, Chairman and CEO of Korean Air. The deal also marks the first time Korean Air has committed to the 777-8F model.
The order, which will increase Korean Air's current fleet of 108 Boeing jets, is expected to support around 135,000 jobs across the United States. The signing of the agreement occurred during the Korea-U.S. Business Roundtable, "Partnership for a Manufacturing Renaissance." U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and South Korea's Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Kim Jung-kwan, attended the event.
This expansion of Korean Air's backlog underscores its ambition to become a more efficient, competitive, and globally leading carrier in the post-merger era. Acquiring these next-generation aircraft is the core of Korean Air's fleet modernization strategy.
The investment is a critical enabler for Korean Air's future as a merged airline with Asiana Airlines. The acquisition of these new aircraft is designed to modernize Korean Air's fleet and support growth as the airline integrates with Asiana Airlines.
The order, once finalized, will see Korean Air's aircraft count rise to 175 aeroplanes, a significant increase from its current fleet. The acquisition of these new aircraft is expected to deliver significant gains in fuel efficiency and enhance the passenger experience across Korean Air's global network.
In March, Korean Air made an incremental order for 20 additional 777-9s and 20 787-10s, bringing its total orders and commitments for Boeing aircraft in 2025 to over 150 units. The acquisition will be published on Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website and will represent a landmark milestone for Korean Air.
This deal with Boeing signifies a strong partnership between the two companies and a promising future for Korean Air as it continues to grow and modernize its fleet.
