He mixed cream and cherries with a cake base that had been soaked in Black Forest kirsch and topped the whole thing with chocolate shavings. Thus, the Black Forest gateau was born.

The list of ingredients: 5,600 eggs, 800 kilograms of cherries, 700 liters of cream, more than 1,000 kilograms of dough, 40 kilograms of chocolate shavings, and 110 liters of kirsch. This 80-square-meter cake, weighing 2,963 kilograms, was cut into 16,000 pieces and devoured by visitors.
A Festival for the Black Forest gateau
The globally popular dessert is now celebrated every two years in Todtnauberg, Baden-Württemberg, with the "Black Forest Gateau Festival." Both amateur and professional bakers compete in cake baking based on craftsmanship, appearance, and taste. A jury selects the winning cake.
