Biotechnology Firms Regulate Operations
In an effort to improve the quality of biowaste and raise awareness about sustainable waste management, the Biowaste Bin Control Action of the #weareforbio initiative will take place in the Aschaffenburg district from September 22nd to October 2nd. This nationwide action, aimed at improving the quality of biowaste, is being carried out in collaboration with an external service provider, Avis, and the Waste Management Department of the district administration.
The biowaste collected in the district is sent to the Gesellschaft für Bioabfallwirtschaft in Landkreis und Stadt Aschaffenburg - short GBAB. At the GBAB, biomethane gas is produced from the biowaste, which is then converted into electricity and heat. The GBAB generates approximately three million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, enough to supply over 750 four-person households with electrical energy.
The quality of biowaste bins will be categorized into three groups: Green, Yellow, and Red. The Green category will have the message: "Thank you, you're doing everything right!" indicating that the bin is free of foreign matter and contaminants. The Yellow category will have the message: "There's room for improvement, action is needed!" suggesting that while the bin is mostly clean, there is still some room for improvement. The Red category will have the message: "This won't do!" indicating that the bin contains excessive foreign matter and contaminants.
It is important to note that foreign matter in biowaste can prevent the production of clean compost and the generation of electricity. The maximum allowed percentage of plastic in biowaste is one percent, and the maximum allowed percentage of foreign matter is three percent. Since May 2025, stricter limits for contaminants in biowaste have been in effect nationwide due to the new biowaste regulation.
The district authority is participating in this action, ensuring that no biowaste bins will be left unemptied during the action. For more information about the biowaste bin control in the district, please visit www.our website/Biowaste.
The controls will be carried out by Avis, with the aim of creating an overview of the contamination situation and raising awareness among citizens about the issue. The action is part of a larger goal to promote sustainable waste management practices and encourage the use of biowaste as a valuable resource from which heat and electricity can be generated.
